Classroom Activities with Online Tools
1. Second Life - secondlife.com
A good application of this program is to simulate social skills in an everyday setting for those who need help. They can apply what they are learning in the classroom about life and social skills in Second Life. They can use a trial and error basis without harming any "real" relationships by saying the wrong thing or performing an inappropriate action. Students can practice life skills in the Second Life world before applying it to the real world. If possible, we would create a group and space for our classroom to lower the chances of inappropriate behavior while on the site.

2. Elgg.com
This is a social networking site that can be used for businesses and schools, especially. You can create your own social network site just for your class. This may benefit students with limited language skills. This tool can provide them with the opportunity to develop their ideas on their own time and their own pace rather than fast paced classroom discussions that may discourage students from answering because it takes too much time to formulate their ideas and response. Students can respond to classroom discussion on Elgg at their own pace. Some limitations may be based on the student and their abilities. Certain students may be distracted or not be able to process all the information on the computer, so using Elgg may not work for all students.

3. SurveyMonkey - surveymonkey.com
This is a great tool to be able to track student feedback and knowledge. This may be easier for some students who struggle with paper and pencil tests. The computer may be a better tool for them. On surveymonkey, you can make quizzes and tests as well as surveys to gather student data. Students can take quizzes at home and take as much time as they need to complete them. You can group student scores together to make easy graphs and representations of student progress. You can also create surveys for parents to fill out to track how the families feel about their child's education. A few limitations of survermonkey are that there isn't much room for creativity and it only tracks student progress as a group, not single student progress. The form is very straight-forward but it leaves little room to be flexible.
